Three ways to color existing concrete

Acid stains chemically react with the lime and minerals in cured concrete to create rich, mottled, marbled tones. They look natural and they're truly permanent — they're part of the concrete now, not on top of it.

Water-based stains and dyes deposit pigment more uniformly. They give you predictable color, brighter shades, and a wider palette than acid stains can produce.

  • Acid stain — earthy, variegated, permanent
  • Water-based stain — uniform, broad palette
  • Concrete dye — vibrant, fast-drying, ideal for interiors
  • Tinted sealer overlay — refresh existing color quickly

What affects how the color takes

The age of the concrete, surface porosity, prior sealers, and moisture content all change how stain penetrates. That's why we always do a small test patch in an inconspicuous area before committing to full color.

Color selection process

We bring sample boards to your assessment so you can see real cured color on real concrete — not a printed chart. Once you choose, we mix to your specific color and document it for future touch-ups.

Questions About This Service

Acid stains are permanent. Water-based stains last 7–10 years before fading slightly. Both should be sealed to protect from UV and traffic wear.
